For "Millipod", "Unipod", and "Decapod", I revisited an earlier piece "Rebirth of a Life". In "Rebirth of a Life" I had (several years earlier) created a sculptural installation using baby socks, (each stuffed and painted and assembled into a large-scale sculptural installation) . Each sock 'pod' represented creative potential and possibility, and this possibility was being 'sent' figuratively into the future to grow, like a dandelion seed.
For "Millipod", I decided to imagine what would happen if I were to (again figuratively) follow the path of a few of those pods and see what eventually 'became' of them. For this I chose three of the original 270 pods. One became "Millipod", in which one image of the pod was altered, stretched, and changed one thousand different ways, eventually re-assembling itself into the giant "Millipod" cluster (Laminated archival digital prints on acetate). This cluster of related forms explores ideas about commonality within variation, fractal science, and the Infinite.
"Unipod" (mixed media drawing on acetate) resulted when a single pod became transparent, and was able to cast a colorful shadow of itself against the wall. This piece toys with the idea of a 'shadow self', or the 'tangible v.s. the intangible' self. (See next set of images for Decapod)
In "Decapod", one pod changes its 'look', expressing different moods or different states of being. In this series of ten drawings, I was fascinated to see the pod experimenting with changing identity through changing appearance. (All mixed drawing media on archival digital print on mylar).
