MERIDIAE represents the super-stream of connected minds, worlds and ideas, re-combining and evolving through their direct impact upon you on a macro scale… yet also through subtle, infinitesimal processes, like the vitality mingling in a micro-droplet of pond water under a scientist’s microscope. For my mother, a risk-taker and incredibly loving being, I made ornaments from dozens of interconnected steel/tin can lids, cut and modified into delicate diatom-like forms. She told me of a Christmas when I was a baby, in which she, having very little money, made ornaments with tin cans for the tree. After she died, I found several hundred tin can lids and 40+ year-old instructional ‘how-to’ books on how to make ornaments from tin cans. I made my own ornaments, I thought of her life, of my time with her through these last years, and adapted her intentions to my own. For my father, a voracious reader, writer, an intellectual, and expert welder, I taught myself to solder the metal to create this piece. I grew up working in his shop, and under his wing I learned many life lessons. Their influence has affected all of us in so many ways, and will continue to do so. I am still learning so much from them and feel their support. Those that cannot be close to the light slowly die, blacken, and fall away. The “Holocene” epoch (also frequently referred to as the "Anthropocene") is the name given to the last 11,700 years of the Earth's geologic history. Holocene describes all of humanity's recorded history as well as the rise and fall of all civilizations. While living beings naturally influence their environments to some degree, none have changed the planet as much as the human species. Habitat destruction, pollution, and other factors are inducing an ongoing mass extinction of plant and animal species. Some projections estimate that 20% of all plant and animal species on Earth will be extinct within the next three decades. Yet the Holocene has also witnessed an incredible evolution of human knowledge and technology. This ‘data-mass’ can also feed/fertilize solutions that could slow or even halt destruction, and instead nurture the Earth. This piece presented a creative act as an alternative to gestating a child within my body. Each day for 9 months, I made a small baby-sock pod sculpture, eventually joining all 270 in a monumental sculptural piece. “Rebirth of a life” honored my choice to focus on an art career rather than have another child, a difficult decision. Each baby-sock pod represented the birth of an idea, sent into the world to propagate and expand. Through re-configuring the pods into a new, grid-like arrangement reminiscent of cellular networks, woven tapestries, or pages from a yearbook, I find myself reflecting upon the importance of root-connection to both familial and artistic ancestry. Since making my choice, I’ve matured into my life as an artist, but I’ve also been hit with the heartache of losing important loved ones. The baby-sock pods have been sitting for all of these years, untouched and unseen in storage. Upon re-discovering them, I experienced a deep, nostalgic flood of emotions, reminiscent of uncovering old photographs or special mementos from the past. Yet in FUTUREFEELD, the shells of the nearly indestructible thorns have somehow become semi-transparent, revealing soft, surprising interior treasures. Goat Head thorns (scientific name tribulus terrestris) are actually highly functional seedpod nutlets that grow in proliferation in many regions of the world, including the Southwest United States (and in my yard at home in New Mexico). The thorny protrusions, while threatening to the outsider, minimize injury to the fertile inner treasure, acting as a self-protecting and high-functioning armor against attack. The exteriors protect and defend the seed-like kernels, envisioned here as inner beings made of leathery skin, sprouting fur-like tendrils, becoming tantalizing gifts of sensual pleasure.
